There is one hard and fast rule in generating income from your website.

If no one comes to your site, it doesn’t stand a chance of generating an income.
There are many ways to generate free website traffic. Here are just 5 of them to get you started.
Exchange Links
Many webmasters are willing to exchange links with one another so that they can produce more public awareness about their sites.
Having links on other relevant sites can help you with your search engine ranking.
Traffic Exchanges
With Traffic Exchanges you get credits every time you view another members site. You can then exchange your credits for views. Every time another member views your site it costs a credit. Although this is a free method of generating traffic, it can be very time consuming. Most traffic exchanges will let you purchase either credit packages or upgraded membership where you will get more credits for each site you view.
Write and Submit Articles
Writing articles and submitting them to Article Directories is a great way to get traffic to your site. It may take you a couple of hours to write an article and submit it to the directories, but once you have done that, your article can be published by many ezine publishers and website owners, and each time someone publishes your artilcle, with your resource box at the end of it, that is another link pointing people to your site.
Publish an Ezine/Newsletter.
If you publish an ezine you will need to create an opt-in form and put it on all of the pages of your website to collect subscribers. Then make sure that you include a link to your website every time you send your ezine. This will encourage your subscribers to visit your site again.
Join Online Communities and Forums
Most forums will not allow you to put links within posts that are not relevant to the specific topic, but they do allow you to put a link to your site in your signature. So do a search in your favourite search engine and find some Forums that are relevant to the topic of your site. Start reading the posts and contribute if you can. Make sure that your contribution is relevant and don’t post single word comments just to get your signature seen. If people find your comments helpful, they are more likely to click on the link in your signature to find out more of what you have to say.
Although the above traffic generation tactics will not cost you any money, they will take time to do properly, but it will be well worth your time!
